1. Rifka's mother does not want Rifka to read Pushkin because she will not need to read when she grows up. Back then the mother only had to sew, look after the kids, and keep the Sabbath if they were Jewish. So Rifka's mother did not want her to read. She wanted her to learn stuff that she will have to use when she grows up like sewing, and keeping the Sabbath. If it happened now the mother would let their child read because women do a lot more things now then they used to.

2. The effects on Mama from the typhus are that her hair doesn't shine like it used to. The affects on Papa are that his eyes have lost their sparkle and finally Nathan has hollowed cheeks and circles beneath his eyes. These were all found on page 35.

1# Rifkas mother doesnt approve of Tovah teaching Rifka Pushkins poems because many of them are based on the injustices of the government in Russia and Rifkas mother wants Rifka to become a women who can sew, cook and keep the sabbath. pg39
2. The long term effects of typhus were shown on page 35: "Papa's dark eyes have lost their spark since the typhus, and Mama's dark hair does not shine as it once did. Even Nathan, with his thick black curls and his strong dimpled jaw, has hollowed cheeks and circles under his eyes. I cannot tell how I look, but Mama sometimes strokes my cheek and sighs. Her fingers are bony and rough." pg 35#

1. Rifka's mother doesn't want Rifka to read the Pushkin Tovah gave her before she ventured off to America because she thinks women should stay at home and stay as a 2nd class citizen. She thinks the only things girls should do are have children, cook, sew and keep the Sabbath. Rifka wants to have freedom like a male would in the early 1900's, especially.
2. The long term effects of typhus in the family are luster in features such as skin, hair and eyes and Nathan has a 'hollow' face and circles under his eyes.

1. Rifka's mother doesn't want Rifka to read Pushkin because women back then didn't get education. They would take care of the family while the father was at work. Rifka's mother wanted Rifka to be just like her so she didn't want her to learn from a book. She wanted to teach her how to cook, sew, take care of the family and keep the Sabbath. Also, her mother might be afraid that if Rifka doesn't learn to do these things, when her mother is unable to take care of the family, nobody would be able to take care of everyone. She also might be afraid because if Rifka starts to like learning, she might leave to learn more and then her only daughter would be gone. If that happened, nobody would be able to take care of the family either.
2. The long-term affects of typhus that each family member had were exhaustion, loss of weight and dullness. For example, on pg. 35 it says "Papa's dark eyes have lost their spark since typhus..." and "Mama's long black hair does not shine as it once did." and "Even Nathan, with his thick black curls and his strong dimpled jaw, has hollowed cheeks and circles beneath his eyes.

1. Rifka's mother does not want Rifka to read Pushkin because her mother wants Rifka to follow in her footsteps. The things her mother does want Rifka to do is cook, sew,and keep the Sabbath. But Rifka says on page 39 "I am bored, Mama I said. "She says this because actually Rifka wants to find a nice quiet corner and write in the Pushkin but, her Mama wants her to obey the things she wants her to do.
2. Some of the long-term effects of typhus that Mama got is on page 35 Rifka says "and Mama's long black hair does not shine as it once did." That means when Mama had typhus her hair lost it's shine. Also for Mama on page 35 it says her fingers are bony and rough. For Papa also on page 35 it says "Papa's dark eyes have lost their spark since the typhus." For Nathan also on page 35 it says "Even Nathan, with his thick black hair curls and his strong dimpled jaw,has hollowed cheeks and circles beneath his eyes." Those are some of the long-term effects after typhus.

1 Rifka's mother doesn't want Rifka writing in her pushkin because she thinks it's a waist of time and she be learning how to do other things like "cook, sew and keep the sabath." One example is on page 39.
2 dark eyes, paleness of hair and body, hollowed checs and circles beneathe the eyes, rough and boney fingers. These examples are on page 35.

1)I think that Rifka's mother did not want Rifka to read Pushkin because normally woman where supposed to to four things: Clean, cook, take care of the family and keep the Sabbath. most times women where supposed to be uneducated and Rifka was reading something which made her smarter. Also she was reading Pushkin which her mother always thought was a waste of time and she should be sewing and cooking and cleaning, Like normal girls.
2)Long term effects of typhus are
1. Fatigue (drowsiness)
2. muscle weakness
3. a bigger chance of getting Mono disease.
So technically they are not completely healthy, they aren't as bad as the actual time they had it.
AMD #6
1. Rifka's mother only wanted Rifka to know how to sew, cook, and keep the sabbath.
2. Mama lost the energy to bake and her long black hair lost her shine. Her fingers became bony and rough.
Papa lost the spark in his eyes.
Nathan has hallowed cheeks and circles under his eyes.
Rifka is always tried and cold.
MKM#20
1) Rifka's mother doesn't like Rifka to read Puskin because in the early 1900s women would take care of their family by cooking, cleaning, make clothes, make sure everything was perfect or as close they could get to it and for Jews to keep the Sabbath. Here is the example used in the boook:"She did not like your teaching me Pushkin in Berdichev. If Mamma had her way, I would know how to cook, and sew, and keep the Sabbath. That is all."
2) Rifka: cold, and tried.
Mamma: roff skin, boney hands, and lost shimmer in black hair
Nathan: pale skin, and tried
Papa: lost twinkle in his dark eyes.

1. Rifka's mother doesn't want her to read Pushkin because her mother believes that women should not be educated and just be housewives sewing, cooking, and cleaning. Also, some of Pushkin's poetry is about how he dislikes the government and Rifka's mother may not Rifka exposed to that. I though take the exact opposite opinion as Rifka's mother,I believe a woman should do anything she wants if it is not against the law or injuring people physically or mentally. Rifka tells us of her mother's dislikes of Rifka reading Pushkin on page 39.
2. Some of the life long effects of typhus are explained on page 35 when Rifka quotes "...Papa's dark eyes have lost their spark since the typhus". Rifka also quotes "... and his strong dimpled jaw has hallowed checks and circles beneath his eyes. Other life long effects of typhus are fatigue, weakness, and not having nearly as much energy as before sometimes not enough to get through the day.

1. Rifka's mother doesn't want her to read Pushkin
because she doesn't think its necessary. Women in that time period were usually not educated, so they worked at home. Rifkas mother doesn't think Rifka will gain anything from reading Pushkin, it will not help her in later life.
2. The long-term effects of typhus are mostly fatigue and weakness. The effects can last for years after the actual sickness have left.
1. Rifka's mother does not want Rifka to read Pushkin because she thinks Rifka should not be educated, only educated in things like sewing, cooking, cleaning and in their on case lighting the Sabbath. That is the case because she wants Rifka to be a hard working mother, just like she is.
2. Some long term affects of typhus on the family members (all except Saul) are on p.35. "Papa's dark eyes have lost their spark since typhus, and Mama's long black does not shine as it once did. Even Nathan with his thick black curls, and strong dimpled jaw, has hollowed cheeks and circles beneath his eyes." These are examples of the long term effects of typhus and the family. There are over the disease, but these changes will scar them for along time.
